The Carpetbaggers
The Carpetbaggers is a 1964 American film starring George Peppard as a figure based on Howard Hughes and Alan Ladd as a former western gunslinger turned actor with the moniker Nevada Smith. Carroll Baker portrayed Jean Harlow in Hughes' film Hell's Angels. The Carpetbaggers was Alan Ladd's final picture; he died months before its premiere. George Peppard plays a hard-driven industrialist reminiscent of Howard Hughes. While he builds planes, directs movies, and breaks hearts, friends and lovers struggle to reach his human side. The film's title refers to self-promoting tycoons who undertake swift financial takeovers, impose authoritarian rules, and then move on to better pastures.
